COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity-Spokane will kick off its 25th annual Blitz Build with a two-week construction effort starting Wednesday, June 3, in Spokane Valley (at 228 S. Carnahan Road). Community members will volunteer to support building safe, affordable homes with backing from Bank of America and local agencies.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane County deputies recovered Rex, a metal T. rex statue stolen on March 8 from a roundabout at N. Dupont Road and N. Mellon Parkway, after excavating it from land near N. Short Road and W. Montgomery Road and returned it to its owners who are now repairing minor damage.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • ArtFest brings 75 art and craft booths to the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture campus this weekend—featuring EWU emerging artists, live music, food trucks, and a beer garden set across the plaza and amphitheater.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Ferris High seniors, Anders Thogerson and Teddy Osborne, won second place in Earth and Environmental Science at ISEF for their study on wildfire smoke's effects on seed growth. Spokane Public Schools noted that only one other student from Eastern Washington had earned an ISEF award.  KHQ
  • Spokane Colleges and North Idaho College report rising enrollments and have set up transfer agreements with four-year universities. These partnerships give local students clear pathways into fields such as wildlife sciences and geological engineering.  Inlander

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Gonzaga University students and local partners are building beaver dam analogs at Thompson Creek today to slow water flow and restore stream habitats. The project, funded by a three-year $90,000 grant from the Department of Ecology, works with The Lands Council & the Fish & Wildlife Service to give students real field experience.  Inlander

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Valley Fire is training new recruits through its 16-week academy (currently in week six with 19 of 21 recruits) as they prepare for expanded EMS calls and various hazards. The program runs four days a week and covers live fire drills, EMS training, extrication, and wildland fire work.  KHQ
  • Spokane is increasing security in preparation for the upcoming World Cup matches scheduled to begin in a few weeks. Local officials said new measures include additional patrols and enhanced coordination with event organizers to keep fans safe.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Veteran broadcaster Larry Weir suffered a heart attack on May 18 at Downriver Golf Course and was saved by his playing partners who performed CPR until help arrived—he underwent emergency surgery and is now slowly recovering with plans to get CPR certified.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • On May 20, Spokane Zephyr FC announced the city’s first professional women’s soccer team will not return for a third season after home game crowds dropped from 2,500 to 1,500. The team’s Instagram said it remains committed to keeping women’s soccer active locally.  Inlander
