  • The Salvation Army of Spokane launched its 17th annual Backpacks for Kids fundraiser today at NomNom convenience stores; customers can round up purchases + donate extra funds through July 10 to help provide 3,000 backpacks for students in need of school supplies.  KXLY
  • The City released the Draft ReFIVE Community Plan on Friday, May 29, after nearly 18 months of public input, and detailed five goals to boost identity, connectivity, livability, prosperity, and stability on 5th Avenue.   • Eighth-grade students visiting Ferris High School were evacuated today after smoke was reported in the building & Spokane Fire Department quickly addressed the situation.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After severe thunderstorms and hail today, thousands still lack power in Spokane as crews clear fallen trees at parks and on streets. Residents report damage to vehicles and homes while city workers continue efforts to restore power across affected neighborhoods.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers on I-90 near Spokane International Airport should expect slower traffic beginning Monday as paving work limits lanes to one between Highway 904 in Four Lakes and west of the Geiger Boulevard interchange from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday.  KXLY
  • City flags were lowered to half-staff on Friday following Mayor Lisa Brown’s directive to honor former legislator Sam Hunt, who died on April 26. The flags will remain at half-staff until close of business Saturday or first thing Monday morning.  City of Spokane

HEALTH NEWS

  • State and federal health officials announced that Mogo brand moringa capsules were recalled on May 25 after salmonella infections were reported in several states, including King and Pierce counties; consumers are advised not to use the product and to clean any items that might have touched it.  KHQ

  • Nick Lewis pitched a complete-game gem on Friday for Washington State in a 3-2 NCAA Tournament win over Oregon State in Eugene. The Cougars will face the winner of Yale and Oregon at 6 p.m. today in the regional semifinals.  The Spokesman-Review
