- ➤ The NAACP Spokane Branch will host a Juneteenth event on June 19 at Gonzaga University's Hemmingson Center + featuring former Seattle Seahawks star Cliff Avril and musical guest Alethea Dumas. The free celebration will include a fireside chat on the holiday's meaning and community unity, and Spokane's first Miss Juneteenth with her court will attend + inviting local residents to join in the dialogue. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 15-year-old suspect was arrested on May 22 in Deer Park after deputies linked him to a series of crimes including a May 20 burglary, vehicle theft, a May 7 shooting, and a May 5 Expressway burglary (charges include residential burglary, theft, and malicious mischief) and he is now held at Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Savanna Oberg overcame a rough start at East Valley High by improving her grades and changing her habits after facing home and housing challenges — her teachers and counselors praised her resilience. She is on track to graduate — planning to attend community college and work part-time in real estate. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ The Spokane Public Library launched its annual Summer Reading Club for all ages, offering prizes like free books and USL soccer match tickets for children and local business gift cards for adults who read at least 15 days each month. The program includes themed events and camps—such as fandom-themed storytimes, escape rooms and coding camps—that will run through the summer. KXLY
- ➤ Spokane Public Schools announced that starting this fall all nine middle schools will offer tackle football for students, replacing the district’s flag football-only program. The district will combine seventh and eighth graders by future high school assignment — coaches will be hired over the summer to provide safety training and teams may play games at ONE Spokane Stadium. - ➤ A new Washington law signed today waives utility connection fees for affordable housing projects to cut building costs in Spokane—Habitat for Humanity is set to save about $16,000 per home built. The measure may help multi-unit developers save up to $100,000 as fees have jumped 600% in recent years. KXLY
- ➤ State agencies in Washington are launching the Secure Your Load for Safer Roads campaign this week to remind drivers to secure their loads and prevent debris from causing crashes on our highways — the Washington State Patrol, Department of Ecology, Department of Transportation and Traffic Safety Commission will enforce load checks and give out free cargo nets and ratchet straps ahead of National Secure Your Load Day on June 6. Fines for unsecured loads can range from $50 to $5,000, and serious cases may lead to criminal charges. KXLY
