CRIME NEWS

  • A woman was struck by a silver sedan in a hit-and-run at the intersection of North Argonne Road and East Knox Avenue at 10 p.m. on Saturday in Spokane Valley — police later arrested 20-year-old Haleigh Weinkauf, who admitted to hitting the victim while under the influence of alcohol and cannabis.  The Spokesman-Review
  • On June 5, a man hit a woman with his SUV during an argument near West Boone Avenue and Dover Road then fled, and deputies later arrested him and charged him with domestic violence assault+hit and run+driving with a suspended license.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Vintage car racers gathered at Qlispe Track near Northern Quest for the 12th Festival of Speed, where cars built from 1948 to 2000 competed during a three-day event. All proceeds supported Meals on Wheels GSC feeding homebound seniors across Spokane County.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On June 16, the Spokane City Council will vote on new homelessness laws that replace the old camping ban with a rule giving a seven-day warning before enforcement plus diverting individuals to treatment if they agree. Additional measures include progress reports and updated shelter requirements, with some critics calling the changes too lenient.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • Trauma coordinator Dana Bosworth said injuries from e-bike crashes in Spokane have increased as riders often exceed helmet-rated speeds — a recent accident left a patient with a lacerated spleen. City transportation officials plan to boost bike lane improvements using federal funds while local health experts stress better helmet use and safety education.  The Spokesman-Review

  • Spring sports 2025 high school all-league teams have been announced for the Greater Spokane League and District 6—honoring top players and coaches in baseball, softball, soccer and tennis across multiple divisions including 4A/3A, 2A, Northeast and Southeast.   • Today, Dave Nichols reported that the high school sports season is nearly complete with the spring all-league teams published and the Spokane Youth Sports Awards scheduled for Tuesday to honor outstanding young athletes.
