- ➤ Spokane is hosting a series of Juneteenth events from June 15 through June 21—these include a Father's Day BBQ, live music, a fireside chat, and community festivals, while City Hall, Municipal Court, and Library branches are closed and parking meters are free on Juneteenth. - ➤ A year after the Grove Road Fire destroyed nearly all of its business, Chewack Fire has rebuilt four engines and is working from a trailer while its shop is rebuilt. Owner Todd Graves and his daughter Emily remain dedicated to fighting wildfires — they plan to be ready for this fire season. KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Spokane Public Schools banned cell phones at Glover Middle School so students can talk face to face, and the Engage IRL program increased club participation from 24% to nearly 80%. Principal Mike Stark said the change helped boost focus and overall involvement district-wide by 36%—one of the biggest improvements in his 22 years as a principal. KXLY

- ➤ Fire season is underway as rising temperatures and dry fuels make wildfires a real risk, and the City of Spokane uses an interactive map on the Western Fire Chiefs website to show current incidents across the country. Tuesday’s fire at Latah Creek was started by a grill in a homeless camp and was quickly put out—Spokane Fire Department official Justin de Ruyter stressed that early alerts are key to preventing more damage. - ➤ The Washington Department of Natural Resources sent more than 200 firefighters to help fight the large wildfires burning in Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada (as crews prepare for overseas efforts). - ➤ Spokane County Prosecutor Larry Haskell announced Tuesday that he will retire next month after a decade handling the county's most serious criminal cases, with his resignation taking effect at the end of July 18. The Spokane County Commission unanimously appointed Chief Criminal Prosecuting Attorney Preston McCollam as interim prosecutor—Haskell said he planned to work daily until his departure to ensure a smooth transition.
