- ➤ Spokane City Council is considering a three-month extension of a pilot program that uses smaller shelters in neighborhoods, which has helped 1,000 people and achieved a 41% exit rate from homelessness compared to 7% for traditional shelters. The extension would last until September 30—an effort to use remaining contract funds and complete the state budget review. KXLY
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former Spokane city councilman Ben Stuckart organized a protest on June 11th outside the ICE office to stop agents from transporting a 21-year-old Venezuelan man he legally guardians and was detained when law enforcement arrested other demonstrators and blocked building access — he had urged the community to act immediately. - ➤ Hanna Alverson, co-owner of Remedy Kitchen and Tavern, was hit by 19-year-old Cautia McArthur near Monroe at S-S Auto Repair and suffered severe injuries including broken ribs, a fractured skull, pelvic damage and a spinal fracture that will require a neck brace for months—McArthur is also accused in her second crash of the night. - ➤ Home Depot is celebrating its new store opening today in South Spokane at 4515 South Regal Street; the store will hire 140 employees—120 of whom are new to Home Depot—and has donated $5,000 to Ronald McDonald House Charity as city officials and community leaders join the event. KHQ

- ➤ Spokane residents protested ICE deportations yesterday by blocking a bus at a Homeland Security facility+ claiming the bus was transporting detainees. KHQ
- ➤ Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown declared a state of emergency after ICE protests downtown Wednesday afternoon — she imposed a curfew from 9:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. for areas between Boone Ave and Spokane Falls Blvd, Howard St and Division St, and Riverfront Park. KXLY
