COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spokane’s aquatic centers open their summer swim season today; residents can gain access to all six centers by signing up or renewing a splash pass — which covers both open and lap swims — and children under 18 must have parental sign-off for safety. The season will run until August 16.  KHQ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Spokane County and Fairchild firefighters knocked down a house fire near 12th Avenue and Flint Road early Monday morning—residents had safely evacuated—and the cause remains under investigation.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Surveillance video from a local restaurant in Spokane Valley—where officers ended a deadly chase and shootout—captured the tense moments as police shot and killed a man accused of carjacking and murder in nearby State Line Village.  KXLY
  • Spokane Tribal Police are asking for help finding 16-year-old runaway Melanie who was last seen June 14 in Spokane - she is 5-foot-1, weighs 118 pounds with shoulder-length brown hair and brown eyes, and anyone with information should call 509-258-4400.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Farmers and researchers gathered Thursday at WSU’s Lind Field Day in Lind to review soil conservation, winter wheat breeding and sustainable intensification — the event offered research station tours that highlighted trials in a region with only 9.6 inches of rain yearly. The Lind research station has hosted tours since 1916 after its founding in 1915 to promote improved farming practices.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Public Schools ended the 2024—25 school year today after a yearlong ban on cellphones in classrooms for elementary and middle school students and in high school classes (phones are allowed during lunch and between classes). Data shows a 31% drop in student noncooperation and a 60% decline in lunchtime referrals at middle schools, while teachers and students noted more face-to-face conversation and better engagement.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Washington State Patrol and the Washington Traffic Safety Commission began an emphasis patrol along I-90 in Spokane on June 16 to study high-risk driving and reduce fatalities and injuries until July 31 while urging drivers to slow down and stay alert.  KHQ
  • Residents met at Spokane City Hall to debate a proposal to reinstate the camping ban which would let police act against homeless camping even when shelter space is unavailable—some voiced safety concerns after recent incidents while others warned that the measure could lead to further criminalization of vulnerable people.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local health officials report a dramatic increase in whooping cough cases in Washington and urge residents to follow prevention measures plus vaccinate children and seek early treatment if symptoms develop. They are increasing monitoring efforts to control the outbreak.  KXLY
