COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Manzanita House, a local nonprofit, says its immigrant legal aid program is overwhelmed by rising requests from people fearing deportation and ICE check-ins. Over 10 attorneys have already volunteered to help meet the urgent demand.  KXLY

  • A crash is blocking both directions of U.S. Highway 395 north of Spokane near Dragoon Drive at 10:30 a.m.—drivers are urged to take alternate routes.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country singer Jon Pardi will perform his Honkytonk Hollywood Tour at Northern Quest Resort—Casino on Friday with rising country artist Kassi Ashton joining him. He released his fifth album in April and his set will include hits such as 'Dirt on My Boots'—tickets start at $34.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Valley Summer Theatre will open its 10th season on Friday at University High School with Pirates of Penzance, featuring a large pirate ship built by David Baker—designed for easy transport and quick reassembly. The family-friendly musical runs through July 6 and adds extra sets and painted backdrops to bring a fun pirate adventure to life.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Biologist Bill Baker from the Department of Fish and Wildlife said Loon Lake’s kokanee salmon numbers dropped suddenly around 2020 to 2021, leaving anglers with few and mostly large fish. WDFW began stocking 300,000 fry from mid-May into June to boost the population and will sample the lake in the fall.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County and the City of Spokane Fire Department are expanding their co-responder program by pairing behavioral health professionals with first responders to improve mental health crisis response. The program, funded by the county's Mental Health Sales Tax (via Frontier Behavioral Health), will launch later this year with ongoing training and community engagement.  KXLY
  • Authorities dropped charges against a former city councilmember—officials confirmed no further details were provided, closing the legal matter.  KXLY
  • The National Weather Service has introduced a new tool for the fire season called a PDS red flag warning that signals extreme conditions lasting three hours or more—criteria met on very few days in the past decade. Residents and partners are urged to stay informed and prepare for these rare, dangerous fire weather days.  KHQ
  • Preston McCollam was chosen as interim prosecutor for the Spokane County Prosecutor's Office after a unanimous vote by the county board — replacing former prosecutor Larry Haskell, who retired last week. McCollam will serve until the County Commission approves a permanent replacement.  KHQ
