ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters knocked down a small house fire early Friday morning in east central Spokane at a home on E. Pacific Avenue near Napa Street—residents escaped safely with no injuries while the cause remains under investigation.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane County sheriff’s deputy Kyle Felix shot and killed Ryan Tietsort, aged 43, on Sunday near Trent Avenue and Pines Road in Spokane Valley after Tietsort carjacked vehicles and was accused of killing two men during an interstate crime spree.  The Spokesman-Review

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today at Riverfront Park, three celebrations—Taste of Asia Festival, the Philippine-American Friendship Celebration and the Sister City Bench Dedication—begin at 10 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. The events feature cultural performances, Asian cooking demos, a karaoke contest, a Filipino dance performance and a raffle with a silent auction supporting local programs.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Terrain, a local nonprofit, is hosting its annual Bazaar art festival today outside River Park Square Mall from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The 11th year event features a new artist performance every hour and vendors offering food, jewelry and home decor.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 4-acre fire burning in grass and timber near James T. Slavin Conservation Area 10 miles south of Spokane forced a Level 3, or leave now, evacuation order for residents on South Keeney Road today after it was reported at 11:45 a.m.—fire officials said emergency crews from multiple agencies are using engines, a bulldozer, and a helicopter to drop water on the flames as several structures face threat.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials announced that crews will complete work on Stevens St. before the upcoming Hoopfest. After Hoopfest, construction will pause on Stevens St. and resume on Washington St.—Officials thanked residents for their patience with lane reductions and intersection disruptions.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local youth track and field leaders in Spokane are stressed as more clubs and athletes have crowded the Podium indoor facility, which now hosts over 3,000 competitors each winter since it opened in December 2021. They will hold a meet on June 27 and 28 and the Region 13 Championships on July 3 to 6 at Central Valley High School — and they are planning a new cross country course in Spokane Valley for larger events.  The Spokesman-Review
