COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Second Harvest will not run its Bite-2-Go summer food program due to a missing $90,000 donation, but Spokane Public Schools and local partner sites continue to offer meals to students — ensuring food help remains available this season.  KHQ
  • Covenant Homes, a nonprofit that helps vulnerable pregnant women, faces a Friday deadline to raise $20,000 so it can open its first permanent housing facility for six women dealing with homelessness, abuse, or addiction—an effort that will spark generational transformation. Executive director Karen Fournier said the facility is fully equipped with beds, cribs, and stocked bathrooms—resources that will teach crucial life skills.  KXLY
  • Mohammed and Sona Dilawar—separated in August 2021 during their flight from Afghanistan—have been reunited in Spokane through the help of World Relief and Manzanita House. Sona works at a local hotel while her family begins a new life here.  Inlander
  • Spokane Public Library will host the free 'Get Loud in the Library' concert series on June 28 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.—the event will feature live music by Madrona Hollow and Comin' Home The Band and include snacks, beer and wine from Brick West Brewing at the Central Library.  KXLY
  • GLOW Children Early Learning Center is offering free neighborhood scavenger hunts across Spokane this summer — the event provides maps for several areas and includes monthly raffles when participants share their favorite stops online.  KXLY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two months after closing its longtime location, Soulful Soups has reopened at 111 S. Madison St. — new owners Aaron and Kaden Earle plan a soft opening this summer and full service by fall while keeping recipes unchanged.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Peperzak Middle School held a ceremony on June 21 when it received an Anne Frank tree sapling from the Anne Frank Center as a sign of hope and new beginnings. The sapling now stands on the Moran Prairie campus + more than 50 people attended the event to honor the school’s namesake, Carla Olman Peperzak.  Inlander

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington State Patrol warned drivers today that road closures and extra patrols will slow travel on I-90, U.S. Highway 2, Highway 195 and U.S. Highway 395 during Hoopfest weekend. The agency is working with local law enforcement to enforce traffic safety and impaired driving rules.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • This week at Hart Field, Thrive International hosted its Thrive Nation Youth Soccer Camp for refugee and immigrant youths from 28 countries to connect by playing soccer. Spokane Police helped coach the kids and donors provided free supplies including jerseys, shin guards and cleats to remove barriers for participation.  The Spokesman-Review
