ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new study by Spokane Riverkeeper found that water below the wastewater treatment plant on the Spokane River had 6 parts per trillion PFAS—which is well above safe levels—even though swimming is still considered safe. The report also advises anglers to be cautious about eating fish from these waters and calls for stronger testing measures. KXLY
- ➤ Starting July 1, Washington Fish and Wildlife will limit campfires and target shooting on state lands to lower wildfire risk—fire rules allow only small camp stoves using propane or LPG, while gun use is limited to approved shooting ranges plus smoking, welding, chainsaw use, and off-roading are prohibited. - ➤ Spokane will take over 911 dispatch when the Spokane Regional Emergency Communications ends its services by January 1 - the shift forces the city to launch a new, city-run system. Mayor Lisa Brown said the city needs at least 18 months to set up a safe and fully funded transition, a longer timeline than SREC’s six-month plan. KHQ
- ➤ The Spokane Police Ombuds Commission will hold a special meeting to discuss planning and training initiatives after Mayor Lisa Brown and Police Chief Kevin Hall requested a review of police actions during the immigration protests on June 11. The meeting begins at 9:00 a.m. at the South Hill Public Library and is open to the public. KHQ
- ➤ Spokane Regional Emergency Communications ended its contract with the Fire Department, giving the city six months to set up its own 911 system — the decision followed failed contract talks over a regional model. This move shows Spokane now wants local control over its emergency dispatch services. KXLY

- ➤ UW researcher Caleb Banta-Green said at a Spokane talk that while fentanyl overdoses still hurt many, deaths from meth have increased 1,660% over two decades compared to a 288% rise in opioid deaths—long-term meth use is causing deadly heart problems—prompting calls for better care for users.
