- ➤ Food insecurity is rising in Spokane County as new data shows overall rates increased from 10% to 13% and young people saw a rise from 13% to 19%; local food banks, including the Salvation Army (which aided over 90,000 people last year) and Second Harvest, say the steep living costs are pushing more families to seek help. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Spokane police officers Brandon Roy and Andrew Willis did not face charges after fatally shooting 38-year-old Alan Jenks during an arson investigation at a house fire on Dean Avenue near Oak Street in March 2024—prosecutors said the officers were justified as Jenks fired two shots and a handgun was recovered. - ➤ Spokane police said that Becky Gibbs, 49, was arrested for allegedly helping her son, Glen Burkey, flee to Montana after he was accused of shooting and killing 13-year-old Gavin Looper on Jan. 25 in Hillyard+ he faces charges like first-degree murder while his flight led to Gibbs' arrest and she now remains at Spokane County Jail+. - ➤ Spokane will begin two pedestrian and bike improvement projects on Monday, June 30th—one on N. Lincoln St. from W. Boone Ave. to W. Sinto Ave. that will close the street until September for upgrades, and another on Maxwell Ave. from Pettet Dr. to Walnut St. that will add new sidewalks, buffered bike lanes, and crosswalk enhancements to ease traffic delays until October. - ➤ On Thursday, the regional board ended talks and set a Jan. 1 deadline for Spokane to build its own full 911 dispatch service — a change that leaves the city with less than six months to complete a process experts say should take 18 months to ensure public safety — as Mayor Lisa Brown warned the rushed timeline could risk lives.
