EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane County’s sole school board primary features incumbent Pam Orebaugh, former ally Rob Linebarger, and retired teacher Mark Bitz. Orebaugh plans to maintain her record on fiscal responsibility and support for girls’ sports—while Linebarger and Bitz propose different tax and board policy changes—and ballots will be mailed beginning July 18 with returns due by Aug. 5 to advance the top two candidates to the general election on Nov. 4.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Spokane City Council will discuss an ordinance to let the police invest in an explosives detection dog, a new resource critical for quickly securing large events and busy areas. The program is budgeted at $42,654 — a move intended to cut delays from relying on distant federal aid.  KHQ
  • The Washington Supreme Court ruled last week that early proposals for the state labor deals are not public until the Legislature approves the budget — a decision that keeps the records secret and means the public must wait for more details.  The Spokesman-Review
