COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local resident set up a lemonade stand to raise money for firefighters and support our community fire services. Donations from the stand will go toward buying supplies + the event showed strong neighborhood support.  KXLY
  • A 72-unit housing project in Colville built by Catholic Charities finished three months early and now shelters more than 20 people facing homelessness—11 of whom are children—by keeping them from losing temporary hotel vouchers. A grand opening is planned for September as the group continues working with Rural Resources and the Spokane Housing Authority to provide essential services.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bright yellow tiger swallowtail butterflies, which have wings up to 5 inches wide and striking black stripes, have been seen in local towns where trees like green ash and maples attract them. Washington State University entomologist David J. James said both the two-tailed and western species will be around until mid-July — offering a colorful but brief show.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The U.S. Energy Information Administration highlighted that Washington led the nation in hydroelectric power generation in 2024 by producing 25 percent of the nation's hydroelectric output — hydro power now made up about 85 percent of the state's renewable energy and 59 percent of its total electricity.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new fire station in Airway Heights opened its doors at an open house event—funded by an $8 million bond that replaced an aging facility from the 1960s and showcased modern equipment like specialty dryers and indoor drains. Community members toured the station and enjoyed complimentary hot dogs during the celebration.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Spokane Indians lost 4-3 to the Tri-City Dust Devils on Friday at Avista Stadium—catcher Cole Messina's throwing error in the fifth allowed the visitors to score three runs and secure the win.  The Spokesman-Review
