- ➤ For 60 years, Fort George Wright (named after a U.S. Army colonel who fought local tribes) served Spokane with housing, training and medical care after opening in 1899 on over 1,000 acres. Declared government surplus in 1957, its historic buildings later became part of Holy Names College and then Spokane Falls Community College (which began as Spokane Community College) to keep the city’s past alive. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Evacuation orders were issued Sunday for a 50-acre fire near Equestrian Lane and a quarter mile south of the Morin Trailhead in Riverside State Park. The Washington Department of Natural Resources sent three engines, two 20-person hand crews, three helicopters, and three fire boss aircraft—resources that helped fight the blaze—forcing road closures along West Northwest Boulevard. - ➤ Spokane commuters returning from the holiday weekend face major delays today as new construction in the Northwest Terrace area closes Assembly Street and downtown improvements reduce lanes on Washington Street—drivers should allow extra time and follow detours with work set to finish by November and July 20. - ➤ Drivers in Northwest Spokane will face traffic delays today as crews start installing a new water main—designed to improve reliability and support growth. The project will affect travel on Francis Avenue and Highway 291 between Rifle Club Road and Driscoll Boulevard—Assembly Street between Rowan and Francis Avenues is also impacted, with work planned through mid-August and finishing by November.
