ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On July 7, the Siegel Fire reached 93% containment at 700 acres (according to SCFD3) and evacuations were reduced to Level 1 (providing relief to affected residents) as crews focused on mop-up, rehabilitation and patrol efforts before demobilizing. KHQ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown proposed changes to lower building costs for affordable housing by deferring up to $150,000 in permit fees, waiving 75% of General Facilities Charges, and updating the HEART Fund. The proposals, which come as the city needs over 13,000 new homes to serve a growing population and address homelessness (especially for low-income families), will be reviewed by the City Council. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A bat in Spokane County tested positive for rabies, marking the county’s first reported case and Washington’s second in 2025—Washington State Department of Health confirmed the case on July 3rd, 2024 and three people exposed to the bat began receiving post-exposure treatment. Health officials advise pet owners to keep windows and doors screened and to vaccinate pets to prevent contact with bats. KHQ

- ➤ Guardians first baseman Kyle Manzardo left the team last Sunday night to be with his mother as she undergoes a heart transplant scheduled for today at Providence Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane.
