CRIME NEWS

  • The Spokane County Sheriff's Office released new photos of 72 year old Harry A. Ballman, a man with dementia reported missing from Deer Park on July 7, after he was seen on surveillance video near Highway 2 at about 4 p.m.—his family said he may be trying to hitchhike toward Boston and asked anyone with information to call Crime Check at 509-456-2233 referencing case #10093409.  KXLY
  • A fire near Spokane Falls Community College was confirmed as arson and officials are watching the scene as red flag conditions with strong winds and low humidity remain until 8 p.m. today — fast fire spread is likely if new flames start.  KHQ
  • Spokane firefighters responded to 15 suspicious fires across the city over a 36-hour period on July 8 and July 9—no injuries were reported and investigators from the police and state DNR are probing each incident.  City of Spokane

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane Valley Summer Theatre presents a regional premiere of 'A Grand Night for Singing', a musical revue featuring Rodgers and Hammerstein classics that runs from Friday to July 19 at University High School. Directed by Andrea Olsen with a mix of singing, dancing and acting, the show sets its scenes in a Central Park-inspired setting — offering a fresh take on these timeless tunes.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three students from Salish School of Spokane spent a week in New York at West Point Military Academy as part of the Summer STEM Program, which offered hands-on workshops in science and engineering. They were among 120 students nationwide chosen after an intense application process and have since developed stronger interests in college and civil engineering.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Spokane Public Works Department announced a $940,000 grant to improve safety near Creekside Elementary School in Mead near Union Stadium. The funding, part of the Safe Routes to School and Pedestrian Bike Program, will pay for sidewalk work, ADA ramps, and flashing beacons in high-traffic areas—where more than 10,000 vehicles pass daily.  KHQ
  • On Tuesday night, the Spokane Valley City Council approved an ordinance that expands controlled substance endangerment laws to cover all persons—requiring minimum prison terms and fines for first and repeat offenses. The council said it will track the law's impact while regional officials show interest in similar measures.  KHQ
  • On Tuesday, Spokane Fire Department fought multiple fires near Copper River Apartments and Spokane Falls Community College—issuing immediate Level 3 evacuations due to the fire’s location below apartments and concerns over strong winds and one escape route. Firefighters contained the blaze and ended evacuations at 5:20 p.m.—reminding residents to prepare emergency essentials.  KXLY
