Good morning, Spokane. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday, July 14, 2025, Spokane County’s annual snapshot count showed a decline in overall homelessness for the second year as sheltered numbers dropped from 1,578 to 1,189 — even though improved survey methods recorded a rise in unsheltered counts. City officials are expanding shelter capacity and closing encampments — actions aimed at guiding individuals toward permanent housing.  City of Spokane
  • More than 1,300 Inland Power customers in Stevens and Spokane counties lost power Monday morning — a crew is working near Deer Park to restore service.  KXLY
  • Today, Cheney Aquatic Center opened its doors—providing a new spot for residents and visitors to beat the summer heat with waterslides, a lazy river, and other attractions. The $15 million facility was built with strong community input and faces temporary parking challenges due to Cedar Street closures—an issue that local officials are working to address.  KXLY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Business owners in Spokane are facing increased challenges from a growing homeless population near their properties — Northwest Renewables co-owner Gavin Tenold said that vandalism, bonfires, and the risk of drug trafficking and weapons have created a stressful work environment. Local businesses have turned off water access and installed barbed wire — and the Homeless Outreach Team is scheduled to return this week to help address these safety concerns.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School psychologist Miriam Carlson is finishing her final year in Gonzaga’s Psy.D. program while expanding her role at Innovation High School by leading small group counseling sessions—she will intern at a local hospital next year to build her clinical skills and connect families with mental health resources.  Gonzaga University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane voters will decide next month whether the city should join Spokane County’s Aquifer Protection Area after a 20-year absence. If approved, city residents will pay an annual $15 fee and those using septic systems will pay $30 to fund water monitoring and infrastructure projects—steps aimed at protecting the region’s primary drinking water source.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study by the American Academy of Pediatrics found 134,663 cases of nicotine ingestion in children under 6, mostly in those under 2—two cases were fatal as liquid nicotine from vapes and pouches became more available. Washington state's HB 2033 will soon include these nicotine products in the tobacco tax to help lower youth use.  KHQ
  • Mandy Gaither reports that heat may trigger mood changes in some people with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), even in summer, affecting about 13 million Americans. Health experts advise caution and extra care for those at highest risk.  KXLY
