ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Fire crews contained a small wildfire Monday morning near East Hartson Ave in Spokane, with the blaze burning less than a quarter acre. An ember from the original fire sparked a second small fire on 8th Avenue — both fires were extinguished and no one was injured. KHQ
- ➤ A downed tree along Dishman-Mica and Madison Road stopped traffic on Tuesday, causing delays for motorists. Spokane County Fire District 8 (the local fire district) posted an update noting that the clearance time remains uncertain. KHQ
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Federal agents arrested and searched several protesters in Spokane on Tuesday morning after a June 11 immigration enforcement protest—including former Council President Ben Stuckart and protest organizer Bajun Mavalwalla—who are expected to face charges as authorities collected evidence from homes and personal devices. - ➤ Dr. Katia Passerini took office Tuesday as Gonzaga University's 27th president after a nationwide search and said she looks forward to connecting with community members in the coming months. The Board unanimously selected her earlier this year—also naming former President Thayne McCulloh as President Emeritus. KXLY
- ➤ Gonzaga University named Dr. Katia Passerini its 27th president today after a national search and unanimous pick by the Board of Trustees — she is the second layperson to lead the school. The Italian native served as a top administrator at Seton Hall and will guide the university as it honors former president Dr. Thayne McCulloh with a new President Emeritus title — marking a historic change. - ➤ Washington is testing a new system to stop drunk driving called the Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety—this system uses infrared light to check a driver’s breath and will stop a car from starting if it detects too much alcohol. It was shown at Spokane Convention Center as part of a national effort to reduce fatal crashes. KHQ
