- ➤ Today at Hillyard Aquatic Center, Providence Inland Northwest is hosting a free community swim session from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.—providing free swimming for families along with hot dogs and balloon animals, and another event is planned at Liberty Aquatic Center before summer ends. KXLY
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On July 19 at 1:15 a.m., Spokane Valley police responded to a crash near N. Bowdish Road and E. Mission Avenue when a 15-year-old driver, showing signs of impairment, drove an SUV into a tree; witnesses said three juveniles fled the scene and officers later arrested them, charging the driver with vehicular assault, hit-and-run, obstructing law enforcement and driving without a license—while one male passenger was charged with minor in possession of alcohol and a seriously injured female passenger was released to a parent. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Sixteen high school students from Eastern Washington spent five and a half days at Gonzaga living in dorms and working on hands-on engineering and computer science projects—guided by faculty and industry alumni. The program gave them real insight into future studies and career paths in these fields—preparing students to make informed decisions. Gonzaga University

- ➤ Spokane County increased funding for Maddie’s Place by $750K, effective July 1, to help care for substance-exposed infants and support their families. The City of Spokane added $300K from opioid settlement funds — the combined support strengthens the facility’s round-the-clock care and counseling services amid high NAS rates in the county. KHQ
- ➤ Spokane County is home to Washington's only arson dog, Chardonnay, who works with her certified handler Jared Harms at Fire District 4—training at home with food rewards. Harms takes her along on calls and errands and plans to keep her after she retires. KHQ
- ➤ Drivers on South Maple Street in Spokane face traffic delays today as the street between 4th Avenue and 5th Avenue is reduced to two lanes for a water main repair — city crews work to complete the project. KXLY
