COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Cooperative Information Network, which provided access to 27 libraries in northern Idaho and eastern Washington, announced its dissolution (effective September 30) due to legal non-compliance with state statutes. Some library leaders worry the breakup will limit free access to books and programs for local residents.  KXLY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash blocked two left lanes on northbound U.S. 395/Division Street near Hastings Road in north Spokane at 5:31 p.m. on Wednesday at milepost 167—no injuries were reported and drivers were advised to yield to emergency vehicles.  KHQ

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane County deputies arrested 48-year-old Aaron J. Leigh on Tuesday for stealing a camper trailer registered to an Airway Heights business after investigating a crash report near Division Street and Farwell Road — Airway Heights Police are also investigating additional, unrelated thefts linked to him.  KXLY
  • A 17-year-old pleaded not guilty to four charges—including vehicular homicide—in connection with the hit-and-run that killed Sarah Doxey near 49th and Perry on July 16 at 5:30 a.m., and police arrested the teen near Eagle Ridge.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews made progress on the nearly 2,000-acre wildfire burning near Tumtum on Wednesday night — the fire was 16 percent contained as crews built firelines around 80 percent of the area while remote terrain limited access. Evacuation orders remain in effect for some regions while officials continue to monitor the situation.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County Fire Districts 3 & 4 will hold primary elections on Aug. 5 to choose one fire commissioner seat in each district. The races feature experienced candidates who plan to manage budgets, staffing, and emergency calls & support fire safety efforts in their areas.  Inlander
  • Three candidates for a Spokane City Council seat in District 3 will be narrowed to two in the primary election on Aug. 5, with voters in that district set to decide who will advance to Nov. 4. Voters may register or update their details until Monday, July 28 (the district covers the area bordered by Division Street and the Spokane River).  Inlander

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA has approved Lenacapavir—a twice-yearly injection for HIV prevention that showed no infections during clinical trials. Dr. Rachel Safran, who was part of the original trial, said the drug could help lower HIV cases in Spokane County.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • The College Preparatory Academy U17 volleyball team won the Global Challenge Tournament in Pula, Croatia after defeating Club Italia, the top-ranked team at the event, earlier this month. Gianna Callari earned Most Valuable Player honors while Janae Demant was named to the all-tournament team.  The Spokesman-Review
