COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 2025 Community Celebration will take place on August 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Underhill Park + it will offer face painting, a live DJ, raffles, free food, and a back-to-school giveaway with shoes, backpacks, and school supplies. Local organizers plan to serve over 5,000 children and host a community talent show from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.  KXLY
  • City officials said a concrete picnic shelter in Lincoln Park received a colorful mural painted by local artist Corrina Ren with help from over 400 Franklin Elementary students, family members and staff. The project began two years ago when parents pitched the idea and secured a $10,000 grant to support the makeover.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Festival organizers postponed the 'Tacos y Tequila' Festival due to safety concerns from increasing anti-immigrant rhetoric, which made the open event risky. The fundraiser was set for August 23 and 24 (supporting Nuestras Raices’ campaign for a Latino cultural health center) and will be rescheduled for next year after planned security improvements.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Evacuations for the Lake Spokane Fire were lowered as officials downgraded warnings from Level 3 to Level 2 and from Level 2 to Level 1 near Happy Hills Road and Rail Canyon — firefighters worked on containment lines Saturday while the wildfire remained at 38% contained across 2,556 acres near Tumtum.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Parts of Pines Road in Spokane Valley are closed from north of Pinecroft Road to Trent Avenue from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Monday for construction to install an underground support system for a new rail bridge—detours are set at Pines Road with Mansfield Avenue for southbound drivers and along University and Sullivan Roads for northbound drivers, with local access available between Mansfield Avenue and East Pinecroft Way.  KXLY
  • Ballot drop boxes are open for the August Primary Election across Spokane County — voters can drop off ballots at locations like the new walk-up box at Spokane Valley Library until 8 p.m. on election day.  KXLY

  • The Sproule family competed in the USA Cycling Endurance Mountain Bike National Championships in Roanoke — 14-year-old Isaac won his race on July 18 by finishing over 23 seconds ahead, and his siblings Aaron and Ellen also placed well — while their parents balanced cheering from home with work on their Medical Lake vegetable farm.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Bill Smithpeters, the coach who led Eastern Washington’s women to their first NCAA Tournament berth in 1987, died on June 28 at 94. His coaching style, marked by trust and emphasis on faith, left a lasting impact on players and colleagues.  The Spokesman-Review
