CRIME NEWS

  • Skeletal remains found in a Spokane homeless camp in April were confirmed to belong to Dylan Harrington— a suspected double murderer linked by DNA evidence to an Okanogan County crime.  KHQ
  • On Monday morning, a 16-year-old French exchange student fled from her Spokane Valley host family and was last seen near Sullivan and 22nd Ave—she was scheduled to fly back to France at 11:30 a.m. but did not have her passport or belongings.  KXLY
  • Two teenagers were injured in a drive-by shooting on Spokane’s South Hill early Sunday morning—officers responded just after 3:00 a.m. and took the victims to a local hospital with one in critical condition.  KHQ
  • Spokane City Council approved a $3.7M settlement with Robert Bradley’s estate after he was fatally shot in 2022 by police—payment is split between the city and its insurer, and critics say the deal does not fix deeper accountability issues.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 28, Spokane City Council's Finance Committee reviewed a proposal to fast track Senate Bill 5509 that would allow childcare centers to open in all residential and commercial zones without a conditional permit—excluding industrial, light industrial, and open space zones.  KHQ
  • Spokane City Council voted on Monday to appoint Shelby Lambdin—a longtime CHAS Health employee and former Health Equity Director—to fill the seat left by former councilmember Lili Navarrete. She will serve until the newly elected District 2 councilmember takes office later this year.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • At the U.S. Pavilion in Spokane, the Spokane Hepatitis C Work Group and partners held The Hep-C Free Spokane Health Fair Monday night to raise awareness and offer free Hepatitis C testing with rapid results and follow-up care. Dr. Bridget Eller from Providence Health said the fair featured a mobile testing unit for adults 18 and over—critical in a county with high infection rates—and emphasized that 95 percent of cases are completely treatable.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Spokane sports legend and MLB Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg died Monday at 65 from metastatic prostate cancer at his home with his family. Born in Spokane, he earned renown with the Cubs and was celebrated for his steady play and character—his legacy will live on among baseball fans.  The Spokesman-Review
