Good morning, Spokane. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 2nd of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A village of thirty tiny homes will be built this Fall in West Hills as housing for the homeless, but some neighbors worry about its placement next to a sober living community—residents and council members debate whether the scattered site model will improve the area. Developers say the site’s low cost and transit access helped win city approval.  KHQ
  • Riverfront Moves, Spokane’s free outdoor fitness series held at Riverfront Park, drew large crowds and high praise for classes like yoga, Zumba, and HIIT on August 1. The program will continue with sessions on August 7, 9, 12, 19, 21 and 23—giving residents more chances to work out together.  City of Spokane

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A collision on I-90 eastbound near Freya Street blocked the left lane and caused traffic delays Friday at milepost 284—WSDOT later reopened the lane as emergency responders worked to clear the scene.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Salvation Army’s 'Burst-A-Bus' school supply drive collected donations at Fred Meyer on Sprague Avenue, Wandermere Fred Meyer, and the Walmart on Wellesley to support over 4,000 Spokane-area kids. It will distribute supplies on Aug 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 223 E. Nora Ave—where families with proper ID can also access free haircuts, immunizations, and other services.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Spokane launched a Know Your Rights webpage that explains constitutional rights and offers community resources – including red cards in nearly 20 languages – to immigrants and refugees. The site also lists partner agencies and legal help + officials said it aims to make all residents feel safe and supported.  City of Spokane
  • The City of Spokane launched a community climate survey on July 31 at 4:57 p.m. to gather residents' input on how to update policies for mitigating and adapting to climate hazards; the survey, available in six languages and open until Aug. 31, will help shape the PlanSpokane 2046 update — Mayor Lisa Brown said feedback from all 29 neighborhoods matters.  City of Spokane
  • A pause in federal funding that began on July 1 left five Salvation Army thrift store employees furloughed on Division and some seniors facing financial hardship; the Department of Labor is still reviewing the Senior Community Service Employment Program — those affected await news on when support will resume.  KXLY
  • Washington’s Department of Ecology fined Arizona’s Climate Care Innovations $425,000 and banned it from the state’s carbon market in July—this is the first time a company has been banned. Officials said the action follows findings that the firm falsely claimed to hold millions of emission allowances to boost its value.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • MaryAnne Lindeblad, interim director of Washington Health Care Authority, warned workers in a Wednesday email that layoffs are necessary due to ongoing funding challenges affecting the agency that helps 2.7 million residents access health care. New director Ryan Moran will take over on August 18 — and many employees remain uncertain about the impact.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Health insurance companies in Washington have submitted requests to raise rates for individual market plans by an average of 21.2% in 2026 to cover rising costs and the loss of federal subsidies. The state Office of the Insurance Commissioner will review 14 requests by the end of the month—if approved, many residents could face unaffordable premiums.  The Spokesman-Review
