COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Swimmers can return to A.M. Cannon pool in West Central Spokane Monday after officials drained it over the weekend to remove broken glass— a spokesperson said the pool is now safe for public use.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • On August 1, during a routine flight near N. Nevada Street and E. Lincoln Road, a Spokane County sheriff’s helicopter was hit by a green laser — officers traced the beam to a home on N. Lidgerwood Street where a 68-year-old man admitted using the pointer and was arrested for a felony, later released on a $20,000 bond.  KHQ
  • Neighbors in North Central Spokane feel safer after the city boarded up a house known for drugs and illegal activity near North Central High School. The property was seized after a seven-month federal investigation found drugs and guns in May—residents worry about potential squatters and fire risks as winter nears.  KXLY
  • At 10:17 a.m. on August 4, Spokane firefighters responded to an active grass fire at People’s Park on West Riverside Drive and witnesses reported a person of interest—a white male in his mid-60s to mid-70s driving an orange sedan likely a KIA.  City of Spokane

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Early returns of A-run steelhead have exceeded forecasts with nearly 58,000 fish passing Bonneville Dam—well above the 10-year average of 30,000 and the predicted 55,600 count. Chris Donley from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said ocean conditions appear to be boosting survival, though it is too early to tell if B-run numbers will improve.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Washington’s Bee Atlas—funded in 2023—collects native bees to help researchers study pollination and plan conservation after heavy honeybee losses last winter. The project has stored 17,000 bees, identified new species, and seeks additional volunteers in Spokane County.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Code Enforcement staff updated inspection districts to focus case management by property type—Neighborhood and Housing Specialists will handle residential issues while Enforcement Specialists manage non-residential and public right-of-way cases. Residents are advised to call 311 to report any concerns as the new approach is now effective.  City of Spokane
  • Southbound lanes on Country Homes Boulevard are closed for sewer and pavement work and will reopen in the first week of October—drivers are being rerouted with little change in travel time.  KHQ
  • Tomorrow night at 8 is the deadline to return ballots for the August primary, according to the Spokane County Elections Office—voters can consult the annual Voter's Guide for details on candidates and drop box locations.  KHQ

  • Ellie Collier, a 14-year-old basketball player from Palouse, was nominated for the Youth Athlete of the Year award that offers a $25,000 prize and a chance for a Sports Illustrated feature. Her nomination came after state championship wins and a strong practice routine + her coach praised her hard work.  KHQ
