GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After the Keeping Families Together Act passed in 2021, child deaths and near-deaths have risen—47 cases were reported in early 2025, with 20 involving accidental overdoses—prompting Rep. Travis Couture and Rep. Chris Corry to seek a hearing on House Bill 1092 that would remove children from homes where dangerous drugs make them at risk. The legislators argue that the law’s current approach fails to protect children and that bipartisan action is urgently needed before the next session.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane voters cast ballots Tuesday on measures that included an aquifer protection fee for households, a sales and use tax for Spokane Valley public safety, and elections for city, school and fire district officials. Drop boxes were set up across the county—ballots postmarked Tuesday were counted.  KXLY
  • The Washington State Patrol is tackling a backlog of 955 firearm cases by hiring eight new forensic scientists and speeding up testing at labs (in Vancouver, Tacoma, Seattle and Spokane), with new trainees finishing by mid-to-late August and year-end. Division Commander Gene Lawrence said the case count may peak at 1,054 this summer and drop by 10% by January 2026 and 60% by January 2027, with cases then solved within 120 days by January 2028.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • The World Table Tennis and International Table Tennis Federation will host an event at the Podium today where top players from around the globe will compete.
