COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Spokane insurance agency donated $10,000 to fund weekend meal kits for 100 children for a year after community support doubled an initial $5,000 gift through a national awards program — the funds were awarded to Second Harvest Inland Northwest on Sunday — as agency employees continue to support local food programs.  KXLY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Spokane Valley police and firefighters rescued an injured hiker near Antoine Peak over the weekend after the hiker injured their ankle and could not walk. The hiker was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  KXLY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Monday, Dave and Buster’s opened in Spokane Valley at 13921 E. Mansfield Ave.—hundreds of adults lined up for a fun night without kids. Local leaders attended the ribbon cutting and praised the new venue that hired over 160 workers and added a fresh boost to the local business scene.  The Spokesman-Review

  • A memorial fund has been opened to help cover expenses after Spokane County Sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Salas, a 59-year-old veteran, was struck and killed by a motorist near Cheney on Sunday as he assisted someone on I-90—Canopy Credit Union will oversee donations via Venmo and direct contributions.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spokane Public Schools students can get free sports physicals through CHAS Health school-based clinics to meet sports eligibility requirements; appointments begin today at Rogers High School from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with later sessions at Shadle Park on August 14 and 15 and at North Central on August 18 and 19.  KXLY

  • Athletics Director Jim Fitzgerald of Spokane Colleges recounted his long career and commitment to student success during a summer orientation session, noting he once listened to Ichiro Suzuki’s Hall of Fame speech during a four-hour drive in June. He stressed that the program builds strong academic and athletic support—emphasizing the motto 'Once you're a Sasquatch, you're a Sasquatch for life' as a promise to his student-athletes.  Spokane Community College
  • Spokane Indians players said that low Black representation in MLB, with about 6% on opening day last season, shows a need for more accessible youth programs and lower costs to help kids play baseball. The team’s 6 Black players out of 35 offer hope as new diversity initiatives aim to grow the sport—providing a chance to change the future of baseball.  The Spokesman-Review
