CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Spokane County Sheriff's Office warned residents on August 13 that scammers posing as law enforcement were calling during the Crescent Road Fire near Little Falls—official deputies only visited homes in the evacuation zone and did not call to evacuate. KXLY
- ➤ Firefighters came to People's Park early Wednesday morning to contain a fire that burned a quarter-acre—one of several suspicious fires in the area—and officials warned that even a small spark can quickly turn into a large blaze. KHQ
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Spokane Valley Summer Theatre got a boost from two donors — one gave $250,000 to cover next season's rent at Central Valley School District and the other committed $1 million for its new Idaho Central Spokane Valley Performing Arts Center, which is 19% complete. Finance consultant Brent Wise said the center is expected to generate $32 million each year once finished — and that SVST will need another $14 million by September to resume construction for a planned debut in 2027. - ➤ Spokane County Fire District 5 said evacuations were expanded for a wildfire burning near Little Falls on Wednesday evening—residents east to McLaughlin, west to County Line, south to Prewett and north to the river were told to leave immediately while areas west to McLaughlin, east to Valley, south to Prewett/Fourmount and north to the river were placed on higher alert. Stevens County Fire District 1 said residents from Devils Gap to the Red Lake between Highway 291 and the lake were told to get ready as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. KXLY

- ➤ The City of Spokane closed Wellesley Avenue between Division and Maple on Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a road preservation project—drivers were advised to use Francis or Garland Avenue. KXLY
- ➤ Spokane immigrant Alberto Lovo Rojas, a 41-year-old local mechanic with three children, was detained in Tacoma after ICE denied his motion to reopen his asylum request, leaving him vulnerable to deportation. His appeal was rejected for being untimely – his family now faces an uncertain future as they wait for any further legal recourse. The Spokesman-Review
