- ➤ Mark Peterson and the 4 News Now Extreme Team are renovating the home of U.S. Navy Veteran John Spurgin in North Spokane — the project began in November when a friend nominated him for a Veteran's Day repair — and have already replaced the siding and roof while planning to add a fresh coat of paint to finish the work. - ➤ Mission Community Outreach Center hosts its annual School Shoes for Kids event today at Stevens Elementary School, giving free shoes and socks to 2,824 kids for back-to-school — the nonprofit now accepts online registration due to high demand and will also offer health services with a CHAS mobile clinic and a DSHS van on site. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Spokane Valley fire officials are investigating eight suspicious fires that started around midnight Thursday near Mirabeau Park and Centennial Trail—this follows a similar string of fires earlier in the week with local law enforcement now involved. KXLY
- ➤ Detectives in Spokane are asking for dash camera footage and eyewitness information about the fatal collision on August 9 in which Spokane County Sheriff Sergeant Kenneth Salas was struck and killed near Four Lakes. KHQ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spokane is moving forward with plans to create its own emergency communications center to handle all 911 calls after splitting from the regional system—City Council will hold its first reading of the ordinance at 6 p.m. on Monday to update the city code and establish a dedicated fund for the new department. - ➤ Spokane County is planning a public service to honor Sergeant Kenneth Salas with support from the Behind the Badge Foundation—over 60 volunteers are organizing the event and attendance is expected to exceed 1,000. The sheriff’s office is seeking community donations to cover costs since state funds cannot be used. KHQ
