  • The Man Shop will host free back-to-school haircuts for children ages 5 to 18 at Spokane Valley on Sunday, August 24 and in Post Falls on Monday, August 25. Both events will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (first-come, first-served) and require no registration.  KXLY
  • Thousands of families gathered at Riverfront Park for the 31st annual Unity in the Community celebration to promote multicultural understanding and youth learning; organizers said the event has grown since 1994 and now includes 150 booths+ community organizations offering local resources.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • A local nonprofit called Our Place in Spokane faced a setback when a man broke into its Christmas shed and stole holiday gifts donated for families in need—law enforcement has filed reports and is investigating the incident as the group seeks community help to recover the items.  KHQ

  • Spokane’s Garland District held its second annual Pride event on Saturday with local vendors, live performances, an art walk, and film screenings at the Garland Theater—Garland Brew-Werks celebrated its fourth anniversary as part of the festivities.  KHQ
  • Folklorist S.E. Schlosser published Spooky Pacific Northwest on July 1, a book with 25 ghost stories from the region including a Spokane tale titled Steak and Eggs about a burned restaurant that reappeared to help those in need. She gathered the stories through interviews and archive research—using local records to capture the area’s unique ghostly history.  The Spokesman-Review
