COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officer Arthur Franklin Eslick retired from Spokane Police in 1952 after a 28-year career—he worked at the tough Monroe/Main and Riverside intersection where thousands recognized his friendly wave. He also served as a scout leader and auctioneer for lost items—before he died in 1963.  The Spokesman-Review
  • On the weekend, Spokane mother Renee Rogers channeled her grief into kindness when community donations helped fund nearly $200 for a back-to-school shopping spree for a young girl attending the same school her 13-year-old son Gavin once attended after he was fatally shot earlier this year—she continues to honor his memory with caring acts.  KHQ
  • Special Olympics Organization of Washington partnered with local law enforcement and Spokane County Fire District 9 in North Spokane at a fundraiser in the Fred Meyer parking lot that benefited local teams including the Spokane Pacers — an annual event that brought the community together.  KHQ
  • Airway Heights Police Department’s Adventure League program has provided local youth with outdoor experiences this summer including rock climbing in Idaho, rafting in Montana and canoeing on the Little Spokane River while pairing them with officers and guides from Peak 7 Adventures—funded by grants, direct donations and community sponsorships.  KHQ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On August 17, a cow wandered onto westbound I-90 — blocking all lanes near the Dickson Street off-ramp until law enforcement safely returned it to its trailer by 5 p.m.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • AARP Washington marked 90 years of Social Security with free events held this month, and local residents gathered at the Hillyard Senior Center on August 14 to learn about maximizing their benefits. Speakers and a recorded message from U.S. Representative Michael Baumgartner—who warned that future workforce changes could reduce benefits by about 20%—underscored the need to protect full payments.  KHQ

  • Former NIC basketball coach Hugh Watson, known for his warm coaching style and unique Tennessee accent, died Thursday at age 84 after leading his team to a 30-5 record and a NJCAA Tournament appearance.
