  • Registration is open for the 8th annual Teen & Kid Closet Socktoberdash fun run on October 11 at 9 a.m. at Mirabeau Park in Spokane Valley—participants can walk or run 5k or 10k with fees set at $15 for kids and $30 or $35 for adults, earn prizes for creative socks and costumes, and bring new sock and underwear donations.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane police arrested Taylor Gudgel yesterday after rescuing a female victim reportedly kidnapped during a domestic incident and treating a male victim injured when Gudgel used his vehicle in an altercation—he faces charges including rape domestic violence, kidnapping domestic violence, assault, unlawful imprisonment and felony domestic violence order violation.  City of Spokane
  • A 17-year-old accused of fatally striking Sarah Doxey in a hit-and-run case was moved to electronic monitoring after a defense motion on August 13—he remains under strict ankle monitor restrictions and will attend a pre-trial hearing on August 27 before his trial on September 8.  KHQ
  • Mason Bolton, 26, pleaded guilty at the Spokane County Courthouse to helping Glen Burkey hide in a Missoula apartment—records show he tracked payments via Cash App for the shelter used in the Hillyard teen murder case of 13-year-old Gavin Looper, and he also pleaded guilty to eluding police while his domestic violence charge was dropped, facing just over three and a half years in prison with credit for time already served.  KHQ

FINANCE NEWS

  • A report from Insurify says car insurance premiums may rise by 4% or more by the end of 2025, with averages moving from about $2,300 to nearly $2,400 each year. Washington drivers currently pay a bit less than the national average but tariffs on auto parts and potential wildfire risks might push prices up—residents are advised to plan their finances accordingly.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the City of Spokane allocated $7.5 million to fund nine affordable housing projects and programs that will add 95 new rental units, preserve 50 existing units, and create 12 new townhomes for low-income families and vulnerable households. The funds come from HEART, 1406, HOME, and HOME-ARP TBRA programs—efforts aimed at expanding homeownership and rental options in our community.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. canceled 22 mRNA vaccine contracts that many researchers say could hurt local research and industry, affecting Spokane's Jubilant HollisterStier and its planned expansion, which will be completed by June next year.
