CRIME NEWS

  • Kelly Porinchok, a 21-year-old last seen near South McClellan Street and West 8th Avenue in Spokane on August 17, is considered endangered by the Washington State Patrol and anyone who sees them should call 911.  KHQ
  • The Spokane Police Department is seeking help from the public to locate Kelly Porinchok, a 21-year-old with brown hair and blue eyes who was last seen on August 17 at a Spokane medical facility—he walked away wearing a knee-length nightgown with pink leopard spots and slippers—and he has no phone or money and is unfamiliar with the area.  City of Spokane

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new monument honoring the Kawaguchi family will be unveiled today at 11:00 a.m. in Fairmount Memorial Park. The monument—built with local partners—recognizes Matsutaro Kawaguchi and his wife Hatsume for their resilience and lasting impact on Spokane.  KHQ
  • Spokane Model T club members drove their historic Ford cars on Thursday to Dairy Queen for ice cream and gathered earlier at a local home to discuss their passion for preserving these vehicles. The 70-member club, formed in 1972 with 136 Model T’s, meets the first Friday of each month except January, July and August at Opportunity Presbyterian Church in Spokane Valley — keeping its legacy alive.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gonzaga University has partnered with Edcor to help working adults access tuition benefits for flexible courses and degree programs—this agreement will let more employees study online, on campus, or in hybrid settings for career growth.  Spokane University District
  • Teachers in Mead School District remain without a contract as classes begin on September 2, and union negotiations may lead to a strike if key issues—including support for special needs, growing class sizes, and clarifying discipline policies—are not resolved. District and union officials plan additional negotiation sessions next week to secure a fair agreement before the school year starts.  KXLY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, Spokane sees sunny skies with highs in the lower 90s and breezy conditions — a strong ridge of high pressure will bring mid-90s temperatures into the weekend. From Saturday through Wednesday, an Excessive Heat Watch is in effect for central and southeast Washington — temperatures could reach up to 105 degrees.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An operator’s strike in Spokane Valley is delaying paving work near East Valley High School — the Wellesley Avenue Preservation Project is now on hold for nine days. The project is expected to finish after the 2025–26 school year begins — city officials are working to find a new paving contractor to complete the work quickly.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Thursday, Spokane Velocity won 1-0 over Forward Madison when star forward Anuar Pelaez scored his eighth goal of the season in the 38th minute—an effort assisted by Andre Lewis as strong defense from David Garcia and saves by Carlos Merancio helped secure the record eighth clean sheet for the team, returning them to first place in USL League One.  The Spokesman-Review
