ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Fire Department is responding to a structure fire west of South Perry District that has left one man critically injured after he was pulled from a side window and taken to a hospital while firefighters report the blaze is under control and officials investigate its cause.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Whitworth University received a $1.5 million gift from the Roy and Bess Mullet Fund and Paul Mullet to permanently endow its honors program and expand research opportunities for humanities students. The donation will also support the expansion of the Democracy Lab— which applies STEM methods to civic engagement projects.  KXLY
  • Spokane Public Schools reached a tentative collective bargaining agreement with the Spokane Education Association, which represents over 3,400 teachers—officials say the deal may lead to improved work conditions. A heat advisory remains in effect until 9 PM PDT Wednesday—hot temperatures increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.  KHQ
  • Teachers at Madison Elementary in Spokane are offering advice to help parents prepare their children for kindergarten and adjust to a full school day—sharing tips on building daily routines and fostering independence. They recommend practicing tasks like dressing and cleaning up to boost confidence and develop good communication skills.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sections of the Spokane River are running dry, especially between Barker Road and Sullivan in Spokane Valley—posing an immediate threat to fish, wildlife and the river ecosystem. The Spokane Riverkeeper is working with water managers to determine why the river has such low flows.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg announced her retirement after 36 years in the fire service and will have her final day on October 6—Mayor Lisa Brown named Assistant Chief Tom Williams as the new Chief to take over on October 7.  City of Spokane

  • Washington State will host Idaho in the revived Battle of the Palouse on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Gesa Field in Pullman—WSU is a 13.5-point favorite and holds a strong series record against its rival.  The Spokesman-Review
