COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, local leaders unveiled a Vietnam War monument in Spokane to honor veterans for their service—officials say community events will be planned to help keep the memory alive.  KXLY
  • Spokane’s annual Pig Out in the Park begins today at Riverfront Park and will run until September 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The free festival offers 65 food booths—serving over 250 menu items—100 concerts on four stages, 45 public market booths, and four adult beverage gardens for all ages.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rainer Weiss— a Nobel laureate whose idea built the Hanford LIGO observatory that confirmed Einstein’s theory— died on Aug. 25th in Massachusetts at 92. He was an MIT professor emeritus and his breakthrough led to many detections of gravitational waves that advanced our understanding of space.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The county courthouse announced plans today to raise parking fees to help offset rising maintenance costs — officials said the updated rates will be shared soon.  KXLY
  • Spokane city offices and public services will be closed Monday, Sept. 1 for Labor Day—City Hall, library branches, the courthouse, and the waste-to-energy facility will not operate while garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection are delayed by one day. On-street parking meters waive fees and parking rules still apply—splash pads, golf courses, and a free Spokane Symphony concert at Comstock Park remain available for family activities.  KXLY
  • Drivers heading to ONE Spokane Stadium or Spokane Arena should allow extra time due to a grind and overlay project on Boone Avenue from Washington Street to Monroe Street that began on Tuesday, August 26 and will run until Monday, September 8. They are advised to use alternate routes during peak hours—this may help avoid delays.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dozens gathered at First Presbyterian Church on August 23 to remember Sarah Doxey, a local health leader who died six weeks ago when a hit-and-run driver struck her during her morning run. Her family and colleagues praised her work—saying her selfless care helped change local health care for the better.  Inlander
  • Spokane Regional Health District hosted a Facebook Live session today with Health Officer Dr. Francisco Velazquez and Epidemiologist Jenni Horecny to explain measles safety for returning schoolchildren. They stressed that children should follow vaccination schedules—receiving a dose around 12 to 15 months and a second before kindergarten—to protect them amid four exposure events including three at Providence Sacred Heart pediatric departments.  KHQ
