COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday in Airway Heights, the West Plains Safety Alliance hosted 'Cops, Kids n Cruisers' where neighbors enjoyed vintage cars, free barbecue, games, snow cones, and safety demonstrations—donations will support local safety programs.  KHQ
  • John “Bo” Handy, a nurse and local climbing enthusiast, plans to open a Spokane gym called The Board Room with special kilter boards for adults but his project is on hold after the 715 E. Sprague Ave space was leased—he will keep seeking a suitable location and investors. True Hope Church is also moving to expand its space and a local developer is planning a four-plex on S. Garfield St. to offer more community options.  The Spokesman-Review

CULTURE NEWS

  • Salish School of Spokane partnered with the new nonprofit Indigenous Fluency Now from British Columbia to help Indigenous language communities around the world revitalize their languages using its language fluency transfer system—this system offers free tools, training and support to overcome challenges like limited internet access. The initiative will develop resources and extend support to additional endangered languages in the future.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Downtown Spokane hosted the 'Soulfood and Sips' event on Saturday that celebrated African American culture with food and live music. Organized by Educate, Entertain, and Get Stuff Done — supported by the NAACP and local student unions — the event featured Southern barbecue, soul food, and French Creole cuisine for regional attendees.  KHQ

  • Stevens County Fire District One warned residents to be cautious amid multiple wildfires started by lightning storms in northern Stevens County and announced a heat advisory from 1 PM Sunday until 8 PM PDT Thursday—firefighting resources remain limited.  KHQ
