- ➤ Spokane Police arrested 31-year-old Carlos Barrios on Tuesday, September 2—charging him with first degree Kidnapping DV, second degree Assault DV, Residential Burglary DV, a domestic violence protection order violation and mischief for damaging a police drone—after a standoff in north Spokane where he refused to let the victim leave a home. - ➤ Spokane police attempted to serve a search warrant near Maxwell Avenue — Lincoln Street, where SWAT officers used breaching tools and a drone to enter the home while bystanders rescued two dogs. KXLY
- ➤ Spokane Police arrested convicted felon Richard Tomich in downtown after an attempt to stop him led to a chase as he carried a gun and bags with fentanyl, cash, and drugs—officers later recovered his discarded revolver. KHQ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The East Valley School District Board of Directors approved a $220 million bond on the February ballot to build new high and middle school facilities—replacing aging schools—and to use $80 million from the state for elementary upgrades. The bond will raise taxes by $1.23 per $1,000 of assessed value after the current levy expires, and the district will meet with community members for feedback in the coming months. KHQ
- ➤ At ONE Spokane Stadium today, Lewis & Clark seniors began their school year with the district's first sanctioned senior sunrise as they arrived before 5:30 a.m. where parents greeted them with breakfast treats—students played games and enjoyed the sunrise as part of the Engage IRL initiative. - ➤ The Washington State Department of Ecology and Spokane Clean Air have extended an Air Quality Alert until further notice — covering Stevens, Spokane, Lincoln, and Grant counties — due to increased regional smoke and haze, and officials advise residents to take health precautions as the air quality index in Spokane remains at 67. - ➤ Starting October 1, a new Washington law requires sales tax collection on services such as IT support, temporary staffing, custom websites, and advertising while removing some previous digital service exemptions. State officials will release guidance later this month to help businesses adjust to the changes. KHQ
- ➤ Washington Attorney General Nick Brown and AGs from Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming urged tech companies and payment platforms to block computer-generated pornography after a Washington law made sharing nonconsensual deepfake porn illegal. They sent letters last month noting that 98% of fake videos online target women and girls — a step following a federal ban on nonconsensual deepfakes signed earlier this year. KHQ
