  • The 3rd Annual SNAP Pajama Party will take place Saturday, September 13 from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Brick West Brewing Co to collect pajamas, hats, gloves, socks and hand warmers for vulnerable Spokane residents — families can enjoy scavenger hunts, face painting, live music and contests for Amazon gift cards.  KXLY
  • Spokane County Interstate Fair opens Friday at 11 a.m. at the fairgrounds in Spokane Valley and will run for 10 days with booths, food vendors, rides and musical acts featuring Vanilla Ice and Sir Mix-A-Lot — offering a variety of attractions. Adult tickets cost $15 to $17, with discounts or free entry for seniors, military members and other groups, and rides cost between $3 and $10.  The Spokesman-Review

CRIME NEWS

  • SPD responded to a burglary in the 5100 block of West Bismark on September 1st after suspects stole several firearms from a garage using a door opener—officers later located a silver Chevy Impala near North Lincoln, arrested 30-year-old Eric R. Peery, recovered several stolen guns, and continue investigating a second suspect.  City of Spokane
  • Spokane Police arrested 30-year-old Eric Peery for burglary and unlawful gun possession after tracking his Chevy Impala from a West Bismark Avenue home burglary with stolen guns, and SWAT surrounded a Lincoln Street home where his vehicle was found — detectives are still searching for a second suspect.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane Arts extended its contract with the city for two years — keeping its current funding — even as the city plans to create a separate Office of Arts and Culture by year's end. The nonprofit will remain independent and work with city leaders to help shape the new office.  Inlander

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shadle Park High School graduate Joseph Perkins earned a top-ten finish in an international Lego contest until the Lego Group removed his runner-up title on Aug. 29th due to a vote tally error—leaving him with a final ranking of sixth—and he received free tickets to visit the Lego House museum in Denmark. He continues to work on builds for a local exhibit and is beginning studies in architecture at the University of Washington with strong support from the Spokane community.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • Donna Miser of Airway Heights, who worked at Amazon, suffered severe pain and weight loss after a pelvic mesh was implanted in 2009 and has since undergone several surgeries that left her unable to work; Washington will soon send final Consumer Protection payments to help those affected by such complications — her experience stresses the need for better safety measures.  Inlander
  • Smoke in Spokane pushed the air quality into the unhealthy for sensitive groups range on Wednesday when Spokane Clean Air reported an index of 117—alerting residents with breathing problems, young children, and older adults to stay indoors.  KXLY
