COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Emily Peterson, owner of Page 42 Bookstore, uses the Little Free Libraries app to check which boxes in Spokane’s South Hill need more books and drives around refilling them to help neighbors stay stocked—she also adds store coupons and ensures children’s titles are available for kids during off-school hours.  KHQ
  • Spokane neighbors are worried about a homeless encampment in a backyard on 6th Avenue, where Rick Walters has turned his home into a shelter under his LLC Holy Ghost Housing—residents report trespassing, drug use, and unsanitary conditions while city officials review the case under code enforcement. Walters said he started the project three weeks ago to address homelessness but faces calls for proper notice and legal compliance.  KHQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local coffee shops in Spokane may soon charge more as the cost of imported beans rises because of a drought in Brazil — Cedar Coffee owner Artemis Yorke said the shop now buys beans in larger lots to try to save money if tariffs come into play.  KXLY

CRIME NEWS

  • Protesters—including former city council president Ben Stuckart and others—are accused of assaulting federal officers by blocking exits at an ICE office on North Lincoln during a summer protest in Spokane and will stand trial on May 18, 2026.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City stormwater work—part of the Maxwell Avenue Bike and Pedestrian Safety Upgrades project—is reducing southbound Ash Street to one lane today through Friday between Augusta Street and Maxwell Avenue, causing slowdowns and pedestrian detours while drivers are advised to use alternative routes.  City of Spokane
  • The Spokane City Council is considering a plan to create the Spokane United 911 Network as a stand-alone department to handle all local 911 calls—this proposal would set up a fund for its expenses and revenues after the city ended its contract with Spokane Regional Emergency Communications in January, with SREC set to stop services by January 1.  KHQ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new study by the Downtown Spokane Partnership finds that adding 3,200 market-rate housing units will ease the housing crisis downtown while 400 units are already in development. The study calls for shifting the mix to 80% market-rate housing—up from the current 56%—to better serve middle-income workers.  KXLY
