CRIME NEWS

  • Nine individuals involved in Spokane’s June 11 protest at the ICE office will face a delayed federal trial after Judge Rebecca L. Pennel postponed the case nearly seven months— the trial is now set for May 18th, 2026 and a new pretrial conference is scheduled for April 20th, 2026.  KHQ
  • Three local gang leaders from Moses Lake, Yakima and Spokane were sentenced by federal court for their roles in the notorious prison gang La Nuestra Familia—Jacenir Amezcua DaSilva received 120 months for gun charges, Jesus Antonio Mirelez got 83 months for links to shootings, and Thomas Lee Weatherwax was sentenced to 75 months for money laundering and drug conspiracy.  KHQ

  • Spokane voters are debating ballot initiatives on student rights today—one proposal could alter who can play girls' sports.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local fires near Spokane are expected to create ongoing smoke and haze that may affect air quality for days + residents are advised to monitor local updates for safety measures.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County will hold public interviews on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the lower level of the Public Works Building at 1026 W. Broadway Ave — giving residents a chance to hear from candidates for the next county prosecutor after Larry Haskell resigned in July. The county GOP advanced acting prosecutor Preston McCollam, Assistant Attorney General Steve Garvin, and attorney Marshall Casey, and the commission may decide immediately after the interviews.  KHQ
  • Spokane County appointed Preston McCollam as the new county prosecutor after commissioners interviewed three nominees+ He has served since July following Larry Haskell's retirement and will continue advocating for crime victims until voters choose his permanent replacement in 2026.  KHQ
  • Utility company Avista filed its annual rate adjustment request with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission that would lower gas prices by about 8.6% and raise electric rates by about 1.7% if approved — Washington families using average amounts may see their monthly gas bill drop from $95.97 to $86.84 while electric bills increase from $123.42 to $126.69.  KHQ
