COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Spokane approved plans yesterday for a dog park in Riverfront Park—located near the Spokane Arena and Spokane Falls Tower—where a private company will manage a three-year contract once construction begins. Design work continues and will include walking paths and benches along the Spokane River after an old gazebo is removed.  KXLY
  • A steel column from the World Trade Center stands inside the front doors of the Spokane Valley Fire Department administration building and serves as a memorial for those lost on September 11, 2001—reminding the community of the sacrifice and heroism from that day.  KHQ
  • Heidi Ferre and her 25 neighbors in the Vel View Water District have struggled with failing water systems since their well failed and now rely on an emergency connection from the City of Spokane—resulting in low water pressure, costly repairs, and a lack of fire hydrants for safety. Local leaders turned down a $2.5-million upgrade that would split costs among homes and plan to ask lawmakers for help again next year.  KXLY

  • Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, died and left student leaders at Gonzaga and Whitworth in shock—he was known for his bold stance on free speech. Leaders say his loss feels very personal—many now wonder how their groups will move forward.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On September 10, Mrs. Rubright from Greenacres Elementary was named teacher of the month during a special assembly. She was nominated by a former student for her work with the Lego Robotics club+ drawing strong applause from the crowd.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Washington Department of Ecology fined Spokane County farmer Robert H. Greiff $100,000 for 20 days of unauthorized irrigation from June 12 to July 25 at Wild Rose Prairie near Deer Park — this penalty comes after over six years of repeated violations despite multiple warnings. Greiff has 30 days to pay the fine or appeal — his actions affect proper water use and streamflows in the Little Spokane River watershed.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane police are wearing special badges to honor the lives lost on September 11th, 2001—paying tribute to the first responders who risked their lives on that day.  KHQ
  • Yesterday, Spokane County Commission Chair Mary Kuney gave the 2026 State of the County Address at the Spokane Convention Center—where she detailed the loss of a first responder, plans for public safety and park upgrades, and a nearly $20 million budget shortfall amid changes in federal and state leadership. She added that commissioners will invest in broadband and traffic safety improvements while asking departments to cut costs by 7% to balance the budget.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The 1889 Washington state constitution will be on display at the Spokane Public Library Monday from 3 to 5 p.m.—marking its first showing in eastern Washington. The document, created by 75 delegates when the state sought statehood, is normally secured in a climate-controlled vault at the state archives.  KHQ
  • Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown ordered flags at all City facilities lowered to half-staff—honoring victims of political violence as requested by Governor Bob Ferguson—and they will remain lowered until sunset Sunday, Sept. 14.  City of Spokane

HEALTH NEWS

  • On September 8, the Nez Perce Tribe said Dr. R. Kim Hartwig joined HHS as Director of Strategic Initiatives for Indian Health Services—she is the first Nimiipuu physician from the University of Washington Medical School and worked at Providence Family Medicine in Spokane—and she will lead new efforts to improve Tribal health care using traditional practices.  KHQ
