COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spokane residents saved a man's life at Drew Lynch's comedy show Friday evening after he collapsed of a heart attack—staff and nurses quickly performed chest compressions until paramedics arrived. Drew Lynch and fellow comedian Rachel Aflleje later visited him in the hospital to offer support.  The Spokesman-Review

  • The Spokane Valley Fire Department’s Engine 2 freed an 8-year-old boy’s leg from a stuck bike crank arm today and repaired his bike—a gift from his grandfather.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Spokane will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Bing Crosby’s career launch with free events at Gonzaga and a show at Zagapalooza on Sept. 27 at 11 a.m.—the Bing Crosby House Museum will be open from noon to 4 p.m.—and Mayor Lisa Brown will name Oct. 10 as Bing’s Day while part of W. Sprague Avenue is renamed Bing Crosby Way with a new book launch and stage show on Oct. 11.  Gonzaga University

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302 strike ended today after more than a month when a tentative agreement was reached with the Inland Northwest Association of General Contractors — union members are returning to work immediately to resume halted projects in Spokane and Kootenai counties.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central Valley School District's Virtual Learning High School has celebrated just over a year of flexible, full-time instruction that has helped students like Timothey Kanyushkin succeed after struggling in traditional settings—offering personalized support from six teachers and access to local extracurricular activities. The program continues to provide a welcoming, adaptable educational option for those needing a non-traditional approach.  KHQ

FINANCE NEWS

  • Financial experts say parents should help teens learn about money by using side hustle earnings to open savings and custodial IRA accounts, which may help grow their wealth over time. They explain that starting early can turn small earnings into much larger savings by retirement.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Together Spokane is holding four town halls across the city to explain plans for Spokane Public Schools’ $200 million bond and the Parks and Recreation department’s $240 million levy if voters approve them in November. The first event is today at Rogers High School from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.—officials will detail projects such as a new trades high school and a renovated community college pool while discussing issues like park tree cover and bathroom closures.  The Spokesman-Review
  • A rare piece of Washington history — the original State Constitution signed in 1889 — is being escorted by the State Patrol to the Spokane Public Library downtown for display from 3 to 5 p.m. today while guided talks will provide more details about its significance in our state's formation.  KXLY
  • Spokane Fire District 9 announced today that it will launch ambulance transport services in July 2026—bringing a new Resident Waiver Program that removes ambulance transport fees for local families. The district has submitted its license application to the Department of Health and received over 30 letters of support from local officials.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Spokane County health officials report a rise in TB cases, and SRHD is planning to hire a new TB nurse to ease the 60-hour work weeks of the current two nurses—whose overtime is a growing concern. SRHD will present more details about the $134,000 nurse hiring plan at the Health Board meeting on September 25.  KHQ
  • Local health officials said no new measles cases have been reported from exposures at Sacred Heart and that the incubation period for last month's cases in Spokane and North Idaho has passed. Officials stressed that cooperation with Providence appears to have played a role in preventing a larger outbreak (no further transmission has been detected).  The Spokesman-Review

  • Snow Development LLC broke ground on The Village at Midway near Midway Elementary in Colbert, a $200 million project that will add a Sinclair gas station, 665 new apartment units and a boutique grocery store—neighbors worry about more traffic and crowding.  KHQ
