ECONOMY NEWS

  • Washington gas prices are now the highest in the country—forcing drivers to pay more at the pump.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs said his team is reviewing a DOJ request that asks for sensitive voter details—driver's license numbers, Social Security digits, and birthdays—and he expressed concern that the data could be used in ways not allowed by state law; he has less than two weeks to respond.  KHQ
  • Eligible Washingtonians in Spokane can register to vote on Tuesday for National Voter Registration Day by using VoteWA.gov online—visiting the Spokane County Elections Office at 1033 West Gardner Avenue or mailing a completed form by Oct. 27 for the November General Election. Those who miss the online or mail deadline may still register in person until 8 p.m. on Election Day.  KXLY
  • Construction projects resumed today after the Association of General Contractors reached an agreement with the Local 302 union, ending a month-long strike that halted work across the region. In Spokane, work on Maple Street may run until next year—upsetting business owners and commuters.  KXLY
  • Spokane County Fire District 9 launched its own ambulance service in July to replace AMR—aiming to improve response times and eliminate transport fees for residents. Fire Chief Matt Vinci said the change kept all emergency care under one agency—making patient care faster and smoother.  KXLY
  • Spokane Public Schools and Spokane Parks held the first town hall Monday night at Rogers High School to discuss the Together Spokane initiative, which asks voters to approve a $240 million levy and a $200 million bond—both intended to fund improvements over 20 years. Additional town halls are scheduled on September 23, September 30, and October 7 to give residents a chance to ask questions and share their views on school and park projects.  KXLY
  • Sister Raffaella Petrini, the highest-ranking woman in the Catholic Church, will speak as the keynote at Gonzaga University’s inauguration of president Katia Passerini on Sept. 26 — a role she earned after her appointment by Pope Francis that directs Vatican City State’s civil administration. She will visit Spokane briefly by arriving the night before and departing immediately after the event.  Gonzaga University

  • Spokane first-time homebuyers face rising housing costs as available homes are limited in neighborhoods like Aspen Park—median prices near $420K and income requirements above $115K challenge buyers as rising interest rates squeeze purchasing power.  KHQ

  • Nate Bell moved from fourth on Eastern Washington’s depth chart to starting quarterback after an eight‑month offseason and three games—coach Aaron Best praised his improved athleticism. Several former EWU and Idaho players have transferred to new programs—boosting their teams with strong passing and rushing contributions.  The Spokesman-Review
  • On Tuesday, Mt. Spokane softball defeated Deer Park 27-3 with Avery Fox recording a cycle and 36 hits, while Gonzaga Prep beat North Central 22-12 with Emma Laughlin driving in six runs — girls soccer games also featured wins by Shadle Park, Gonzaga Prep, Lakeside, West Valley, and Freeman.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane native Neil Everett and longtime ESPN anchor Stan Verrett have launched a new sports show on Twitch that airs live on Tuesdays and Fridays at 3 p.m.—the duo brings decades of experience from their time on Los Angeles SportsCenter. They plan to use the digital platform to reach a younger audience and continue their well-known on-air partnership.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Boulevard Race returns this Sunday in downtown Spokane’s University District with 4,000 runners and walkers expected to run a 4-mile course at 10 a.m. The race benefits the Community Cancer Fund and features 16 entertainment zones – from a foam zone to Mardi Gras-style beads – along with course improvements that turn The Hill into a downhill section.  KXLY
