- ➤ Spokane County Fire District 4 will host its first annual Fall Festival on October 24 from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Station 44 in Mead—families can enjoy pumpkin carving, Touch-a-Truck, and a virtual reality fire extinguisher simulation along with a fire safety campaign on lithium ion batteries; tickets cost $10 with a $5 meal option while children under 3 enter free. - ➤ On Saturday morning, 75 kids — each receiving $150 for new clothes — shopped at Spokane Valley Old Navy with law enforcement at the annual Shop with a Cop event organized by the Salvation Army and a local school district to help families in need prepare for the new school year. KXLY

- ➤ Port of Subs, a Reno-based sandwich chain, plans to open its first Spokane location at 7808 N. Division St as it submits a permit to remodel a former Firehouse Subs space and expects strong local support—developers have also filed plans for a four-story apartment building on South Hill at 619 S. - ➤ Spokane Police reported on September 8 that new camping rules led to 212 contacts and no arrests during 120 calls in a pilot program—officers now focus on linking people with community services to help reduce repeated incidents. KXLY

- ➤ Seattle-based artist Kate Powell presents her first solo exhibit, Material Girl, at downtown Spokane’s D2 Gallery—featuring 47 acrylic still life paintings inspired by everyday objects and self portraits—and the show, which opened Sept. 5, will run until Sept. 27. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ The annual Halloween pumpkin coloring contest invites children 12 and under to mail or deliver entries to The Spokesman-Review by 5 p.m. on Oct 20. Staff judges will choose winners in three age divisions—winners will receive a Mobius Discovery Center gift certificate and have their artwork printed and displayed at Mobius, 331 N. - ➤ Former NIH director Francis Collins will speak at Whitworth University’s Presidents Leadership Forum at the Fox Theater on Oct. 2 to discuss his book on truth, science, faith and trust. - ➤ STA launched the new Route 7 Valley/Airport that connects Liberty Lake, Spokane Valley and Spokane to the Spokane International Airport without transfers. Today, STA expanded service to Airway Heights and the Perry District and introduced a new double decker bus fleet for Cheney and West Plains as part of its final service improvements from the 2016 ballot measure. - ➤ WSU announced that fifth-year senior Zevi Eckhaus will start as quarterback in the Apple Cup after coach Jimmy Rogers replaced third-year sophomore Jaxon Potter—who threw multiple interceptions last week. Eckhaus, a transfer from Bryant who played in the Holiday Bowl, will lead the Cougars in Saturday's rivalry game. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ On Saturday, prep sports in the Greater Spokane League and Eastern Washington featured a 3-3 girls soccer tie as Central Valley's Aubree Bates scored a first-half hat trick and Ferris volleyball won 3-0 over North Central with KJ Jacobson recording 17 assists and eight defensive saves. Additional matches ended with wins and ties—Ferris boys finished fourth at the CAN-AM Invitational with five runners placing in the top thirty. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Washington State lost 59-24 to Washington on Saturday night as injuries sidelined key defenders and the team struggled with tackling dual-threat quarterbacks—allowing 13 of 15 third-down conversions.
