- ➤ On Thursday, the Spokane County Courthouse’s Jury Room held a vigil for the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims with lapel pins, a flameless LED candle and boxes of tissues placed near each seat to honor lives lost since 1961. Family members and local officials shared heartfelt words as they marked the homicides that affected the community, including the case of Justin Daniel, who was killed in April 2024. - ➤ Washington State University’s EschLEAD program is expanding after its first year by adding new faculty, forming an advisory board, and building industry partnerships with local biotech firms. - ➤ Spokane is launching a new coordinated street outreach model today to help homeless individuals, and the navigation center at Cannon Street Shelter will transition to a day-use resource hub starting the first week of October. Outreach teams will be stationed in all four police precincts and will work with the police+city programs to improve access to mental health care+support services for those in need. KHQ
- ➤ Gonzaga’s Institute for Climate, Water, and the Environment will host a non-partisan forum on October 1 at 6 p.m.—in the Globe Room of Cataldo Hall—where candidates for Spokane and Spokane Valley City Council will answer questions on climate policy. Gonzaga University
- ➤ Spokane Valley City Council is set to review a proposal for a 65,000 square feet ice rink and recreation facility presented on September 23 that is fully funded by a local benefactor. The Innovia Foundation seeks a ground lease for 99 years — letting the city buy the $44 million facility for $9.4 million as local groups including the Spokane Chiefs support the project. KHQ
- ➤ The Department of Veterans Affairs today awarded $35,562,125 in grants to eight groups in Washington to help Veterans who are homeless or at risk of losing their homes. The funds will be used in fiscal year 2026 for housing, health care, legal aid and financial help—services that many Veterans need. KHQ
- ➤ Spangle Cemetery District is asking residents to pass a tax levy in the Nov. 4 election to help cover the cost of landscaping and maintenance on the 11-acre cemetery. - ➤ The Department of Natural Resources announced that $29 million in federal grants will go to four restoration projects in eastern and central Washington—Colombia Land Trust will reduce hazardous fuel on Yakama lands, Spokane Conservation District will expand education programs, Spokane Valley Fire Department will boost wildfire mitigation, and Okanogan County Electric Cooperative will manage vegetation to lower fire risks under the USDA’s Community Wildfire Defense Grant program.
