Volunteers from Spokane Reimagined installed 29 hand-built benches at bus stops over the weekend—without prior approval—to call for better seating for those who walk, bike and use transit.

The installation, part of the Week Without Driving challenge, urged city officials and the transit authority to address gaps in bus stop amenities.

The Spokane Valley Museum was honored for its historic renovation of the Opportunity Township Hall after receiving a 2025 preservation award from Washington’s Historic Preservation Office—restoration work completed over 21 years was funded by a Sivinski grant and private donations with key help from volunteers.

Incumbent Gary Vanderholm, who has served on the Riverside School Board for 25 years, and first-time candidate Sarah Ramsden, a speech language pathologist at Mt. Spokane, are running for the school board seat and both stress the need for safer, cooler school spaces—especially with plans to support an $18 million capital levy in November for upgrades. Their campaigns focus on improving the outdated HVAC system and increasing transparency in spending local tax dollars.

Mobley, urged Stevens County commissioners at a Sept. 16 meeting to form a committee to review the U.S. Constitution in an effort to reclaim the republic. The idea — involving former Commissioner Wes McCart and others — has stalled as disagreements over bylaws and record-keeping raise legal concerns over the Open Public Meetings Act.

Spokane County law enforcement will soon add memorial stickers on patrol cars to honor Sergeant Kenneth Salas, who died last month on Interstate 90 near Four Lakes while clearing debris—his 34 years of service and near-retirement status are remembered with the L558 sticker.

Salas was struck by a motorcycle, and the sticker serves as a lasting tribute to his dedication.

Built in 1910, the 15-story building on Stevens Street and Riverside was first the Old National Bank with light brick and glazed terra cotta tile that set a new mark in Spokane’s skyline.

Nearby, Spokane Realty built an eight-story Realty Building with plans for expansion that later housed a radio station, police, and low-income apartments — now known as the Delaney Apartments.
