COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 8, four firefighters from Truck 14 were honored by the Spokane Fire Department for rescuing an unconscious man during a structure fire — their swift response with Engine 11 ensured a successful rescue.  KHQ
  • Wildlife officials at the Department of Fish and Wildlife opened an online survey today to gather public suggestions for the hunting seasons planned for 2027—2029, aiming to guide the upcoming rulemaking process. Meanwhile, the Spokane Audubon Society will meet at Shadle Park Library from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and friends of Tubbs Hill plan a fall cleanup next Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon at East Tubbs Hill Park.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Local food banks in Spokane are planning for increased demand as more residents may soon rely on their services—officials say they are boosting supplies and volunteer efforts to meet rising needs.  KXLY
  • The Ridpath Apartments face tough questions as many people gather outside while some struggle with drug use, and residents say they merely help each other. City leaders and housing managers are working on plans to add safe outdoor spaces—community members say that change could help end unfair group ideas about those living there.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane voters will soon decide on the Together Spokane proposal— a $440 million tax package that will fund upgrades at all 58 schools and 104 parks. The measure combines a school bond with a parks levy— raising taxes slightly to pay for new projects and safety improvements.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County voters will decide on several proposals in the upcoming general election on November 4. Medical Lake residents will vote on a fireworks ban, Spokane Public Schools are asking for voter approval of a $200 million bond to modernize schools, and Liberty Lake voters will decide on funding a new community center and library — ballots are mailed October 15 to 17 with registration open until October 27.  KHQ
  • Spokane County Fire District 9 was awarded a grant to fund an in-house O2X human performance specialist — a program designed to improve firefighter strength, mobility, injury prevention, nutrition and wellness — Chief Matt Vinci said the move will help the team serve the community.  KXLY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Spokane is moving forward with several housing projects that include a Kendall Yards plan at 2114 W. Falls Ave with two three-story buildings offering 10 units, a new Salish School campus called River Family Haven at 2720 W. Elliot Court featuring residential, cultural and classroom spaces, and a townhome project of seven three-story buildings at 7724 N. Austin Road. The Kendall Yards project is estimated at $3 million, the school campus will go to bid next week with groundbreaking planned by February and a 24‐month construction period, and the townhomes come with a projected cost of $6.5 million.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • Whitworth rallied in the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon at Hanson Stadium in Forest Grove to score a 28–14 win over Pacific and break a two-game skid — the Pirates will host George Fox at 1 p.m. on Saturday for homecoming at the Pine Bowl.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Tyon Grant-Foster, a Gonzaga transfer, was introduced at Kraziness in the Kennel Saturday at the McCarthey Athletic Center and played in a scrimmage with his team. His waiver remains pending—he will have to wait for NCAA approval before the season opener on Nov. 3.  The Spokesman-Review
  • On Saturday, Deer Park won 1 to 0 in girls soccer with Sienna Breneman scoring the only goal, Eastmont beat Central Valley 3 to 1 in volleyball with Campbell Lathan making 17 saves and Lydia Daines setting up 25 plays, and Prosser won 1 to 0 in boys soccer. In the 8th Annual Battle for the 509 cross country race, Lincoln won the boys and girls contests with Leroy Lozano Mejia clocking 15:11.70 and Ellery Lincoln finishing at 17:32.50 — strong results from Greater Spokane League schools.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Week 5 games in the Greater Spokane League split teams into top and bottom groups with 4A leaders including Gonzaga Prep, Mead and Lewis and Clark, 3A frontrunners like Mt. Spokane and Cheney, and a crucial win for West Valley in 2A. Postseason seeding will be decided in upcoming head-to-head matchups — including a Tuesday play-in game for the No. 3 team in 4A — as teams prepare for Week 10.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Spokane Chiefs lost a close 4-3 game to Prince George when Bauer Dumanski scored with less than 3 minutes left and coach Brad Lauer said the game showed the team's weak power play that must improve for a better season start.  The Spokesman-Review
