COMMUNITY NEWS

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, hundreds gathered at St. Mary's Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in north Spokane for a long holiday service featuring traditional singing, chime ringing, and the carrying of a replica of the holy Ark of the Covenant. The celebration marked a year since the congregation purchased the church from Messiah Evangelical Lutheran—giving them a larger space to worship and feast on traditional Ethiopian dishes.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Spokane Brewing office at Lincoln Street and Broadway Avenue was built in 1913 with funds from a New York brewery sale and later served printing and film production businesses before being remodeled and sold in 2020. It now stands across from Spokane Falls Tower—currently under construction.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Spokane Symphony, led by Music Director James Lowe, presented Masterworks 2 with four pieces that evoke nature from composers Mahler, Debussy, Rautavaara, and Grieg.   • On October 3, 483 local artists gathered in downtown Spokane at Terrain 16—hosted by nonprofit Terrain on West Riverside—to showcase music, dance, film, poetry and painting.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The West Plains PFAS Response Task Force will hold a listening session on October 16 from 4–5:30 p.m. at the Spokane County Library Airway Heights Branch—inviting residents who use PFAS filters to share feedback on a new home water filter design that aims to better remove contaminants.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane County officials urge residents to vote in local elections because these races affect law enforcement, pothole repairs and school board decisions. Ballots will be mailed soon—over 26 drop boxes are available for early returns before the November 4 election.  KHQ
  • David Haring becomes CEO of Spokane Airports today after a nationwide search and unanimous board decision. He brings over 20 years of aviation experience from Lincoln and Cheyenne and will lead the airport through planned growth—strengthening regional connectivity.  KHQ
  • Councilman and teacher Zack Zappone—running for a second term—won the primary with 51.3% while his longtime opponent Christopher Savage, on his fourth try, received 28.8%; both candidates have clashed with personal attacks and differing views on public safety, housing, and homelessness in Northwest Spokane.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Residents from South Spokane and District 2 will gather at Ferris High School Commons on Tuesday, Oct. 7 to learn about the Together Spokane bond and levy before the November 4 vote. Dr. Adam Swinyard and Garrett Jones will explain plans to improve schools and parks—such as replacing Adams Elementary with a new facility that features a Boys & Girls Club—in the town hall discussion.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Katrina Doty's family found support at Lion's Heart—a new organization founded by Krista Reeder and Maggie Rowe to help children cope with loss after her husband's 2023 car accident; her sons attended a November day camp that provided peer support in a safe setting. Lion's Heart is now opening registration and will seek more volunteers and board members as it expands its grief support programs.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Public Library is hosting an event today at Shadle Library from 5 to 6:30 p.m. — Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors will explain Medicare options and fraud prevention tips ahead of open enrollment starting Oct. 15.  The Spokesman-Review
