ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A grease fire broke out in the kitchen of Frank's Diner in downtown Spokane but was quickly contained—with firefighters arriving within three minutes—and the restaurant reopened on October 7 at 5:35 p.m. with no injuries reported.  KHQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Starbucks closed three Spokane coffeehouses at 2703 N. Division St.—1821 N. Hamilton St.—9335 N. Newport Hwy.—and its Ritzville location as part of a billion-dollar restructuring plan announced by CEO Brian Niccol that affected 369 Washington employees; the closures began last week while the company prepares to update 1,000 stores and cut 900 non-retail roles.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Local rancher Jordan Barnes and bison jerky maker Dave Allee have partnered to use every part of an animal—turning fattier by-products into skin care products and savory jerky. Barnes crafts balms from rendered fats while Allee prepares pasture-raised jerky, and they plan a full animal utilization line that will reduce waste and boost local production.  The Spokesman-Review

  • Pianist YunJoung Park gave a world-class recital last Saturday at the Steinway Gallery in Spokane Valley+ she played Schumann’s Fantasiestucke and Chopin’s Etudes with strong emotion and skill.  The Spokesman-Review
  • A new cookbook, To Die For: A Cookbook of Gravestone Recipes, compiled by Rosie Grant, features 40 recipes sourced from gravestones worldwide— including Marty Woolf’s ranch dip recipe from Saltese Cemetery in Greenacres.   • Nine adults graduated from the Spokane Salish immersion program in Wellpinit on Tuesday, doubling fluent speakers through a two-year, $2 million pilot funded by the Spokane Tribe. The graduates plan to share the language with their families and communities to keep it alive—ensuring the survival of their cultural heritage.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane will celebrate Bing Crosby’s legacy this weekend when a section of Sprague Avenue is renamed Bing Crosby Way and a live re-enactment of his early journey in a 1916 Model T is held—Bing’s daughter Mary Crosby and her family will join the event, which also features a plaque at the Symon building where he once performed.  The Spokesman-Review

  • Spokane Public Schools and Spokane Parks hosted their final Together Spokane town hall Tuesday at Ferris High School in the south region to update voters on a $440M bond and levy package set for the November ballot — the meeting also shared news that the Spokane Youth Sports Association will build a facility at Ferris instead of a Glenrose sports complex, with a virtual town hall scheduled for October 14 for more input.  KXLY
  • Spokane is updating its Engagement and Enforcement ordinance to address public camping and fentanyl concerns as part of Mayor Lisa Brown's H.O.M.E. Initiative. Police Chief Kevin Hall said officers can choose to arrest or transport people to a care facility, and a new program will add 10 dedicated jail beds for care and stabilization.  KHQ
  • Today, the City of Spokane celebrates Customer Service Week by honoring teams like Spokane 311, Public Works, Solid Waste, and Utility Billing—these professionals received positive reviews for their prompt and friendly help across many city services.
