COMMUNITY NEWS

  • West Plains Chamber of Commerce is partnering with First Interstate Bank to host a community food drive on October 15 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the bank branch in Airway Heights—nonperishable foods will be collected to aid military families at Fairchild Air Force Base during the shutdown's impact on pay.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Peter Nelson is a graduate of Spokane Community College's Automotive Technology program who now works as a Line Technician at Mercedes-Benz of Spokane while racing rallycross events—he said his education built both his repair and communication skills. He is taking Mercedes training for electric vehicles and hopes to become a teacher for future mechanics.  Spokane Community College
  • Spokane Public Schools and city parks proposed more than 200 projects if voters approve a $200 million bond and a $240 million levy, with a key plan to replace Adams Elementary— the city’s second oldest public school— with a new facility that will have classrooms, a built-in Boys and Girls Club and a five-court indoor field house. Construction will start after winter break if the bond passes, and temporary classrooms will be arranged for students in the meantime.  The Spokesman-Review

  • Local officials announced that energy tax breaks for homeowners will soon end—residents are urged to check their eligibility and act before the benefits expire.  KXLY
  • Federal government shutdown is causing severe financial strain for employee families as up to 750,000 workers may be furloughed daily — financial institutions offer payment deferrals, low-cost loans, and free coaching while experts urge cutting non-essential spending and contacting creditors.  KXLY
  • Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff on Friday, October 17 — a tribute to four U.S. Army soldiers who died in an aviation mishap on September 17 — state officials said.  KHQ
  • Stevens County Fire District 1 will buy two new CPR compression devices with a $35,000 FEMA grant — the devices reduce staffing needs on rural calls and work with LifeFlight. Crews will train on them before they are used in service.  KHQ

  • UW and GU presidents Robert J. Jones and Katia Passerini named eight new business+ civic+ health care leaders to join four returning advisors on the 12-member UW-GU Health Partnership Advisory Council that will work to boost research and education in our region.  Gonzaga University

  • A new construction project will begin on Thursday in Spokane and officials expect to share more details as work gets underway.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • WSU coach Jimmy Rogers said little about OL Christian Hilborn’s injury—he missed the game on crutches with his knee in a brace and may sit out further action—and the team will watch his progress while backup players step in; he also noted that receiver Devin Ellison, as well as Carter Pabst and defensive tackle Mike Sandjo, are recovering and will be evaluated this week.  The Spokesman-Review
